Inside Bleecker Street Records

For the first fourteen years Foods of NY Tours would stroll by Bleecker Street Records pointing out the wide range of records for sale, new and old.  It was one and still is, one of the premiere record stores in Greenwich Village.  But when they lost their lease and had to move away from their namesake street, everyone thought all would be lost.  But the music lives on!  Although the street name is now a number, West 4th st. is happy host to this legendary shop.  You may be entering one block away, but once inside you are instantly transported back to Bleecker St. This article spins casual conversation and classic photos of the new shop, but reminiscent of the old one…now a Starbucks.

After a storied history and a recent relocation, Bleecker Street Records is set to close its doors permanently. The iconic record store, which once held a prime spot on its namesake Bleecker Street—previously occupied by Golden Disc Records—moved to West 4th Street, ironically taking over the premises of the former Disc-O-Rama Records. This relocation, however, marks the end of its journey as the store announces its closure.

The End of an Era and a New Beginning for Generation Records

The decision to close Bleecker Street Records comes after careful consideration, influenced by the logistical challenges of operating two stores in close proximity amidst skyrocketing rents in Manhattan. The announcement marks a poignant moment in Manhattan’s music retail scene, signifying the loss of another cherished record store. Nevertheless, the focus now shifts to strengthening Generation Records, aiming to preserve its status as a beloved Village fixture.

Consolidation and Renewal

In a strategic move to streamline operations and fortify Generation Records’ presence, all inventory from Bleecker Street Records will be integrated into Generation Records. The goal is to harness combined resources to create a more robust and focused music retail experience for customers. Starting Halloween 2016, Generation Records will operate with extended hours, welcoming visitors from noon to 9 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. This transition is seen as an opportunity to revitalize the record store scene in Manhattan, with plans to infuse a wide range of products and significant enhancements to the shopping experience.

Record Store Day and Looking Ahead

As the community prepares to bid farewell to Bleecker Street Records, there’s an optimistic outlook for what lies ahead. Generation Records is set to become the go-to destination for music enthusiasts, especially with Record Store Day around the corner on Black Friday, November 25th. While the closure of Bleecker Street Records marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of a new chapter for Generation Records and its commitment to keeping the vinyl spirit alive in the Village.
